Sambharam or Morum Vellam is a spiced buttermilk drink from Kerala. It is healthy summer drink which leaves you feeling totally refreshed. This drink is also part of the Kerala Sadya. I usually make it in a blender and then sieve it. But, you can also just crush together all the spices and add it to the curd for making this buttermilk.

A spiced buttermilk which makes for a great summer drink too.
Thick Curd – 1 cup
Cold Water – 1.5-2 cups (add more if needed)
Green Chilli – 2, roughly chopped and crushed
Curry Leaves – 12-15
Ginger – 1 inch piece, crushed
Salt – as per taste
Ice – as needed
- In a mixer jar, add the curd, half of the water, green chilli, curry leaves, ginger, salt and ice and blend well.
- Add more water to adjust the consistency of the butter milk.
- Alternatively, you can crush together the green chillies, curry leaves and ginger and add it to the curd, Then, add the water and ice to make the buttermilk.
- Sieve this and serve chilled.
