Apple Crumble

This English dessert is truly one of the best way to sweeten your mouth after having a lavishing meal. A stewed apple top with a mixture of butter, flour,sugar and a topping of oats makes this sweet dish one of the very rare combinations of deliciousness and nutrition, hence making it a delightfully rich dessert.

Making Apple Crumble is truly as amazing of a cooking routine as it is to eat it. This extremely simple dish can be easily made by anyone. And the best part is to serve it with this homemade Vanilla Sauce. And if you feel like indulging further, go ahead and warm up a bowl of apple crumble and top it up with some ice-cream and Butterscotch Sauce.

Few things to keep in mind

  • Apples: I have used green apples for this recipe as I personally prefer the tanginess that they add to the dish. You can use red apples too if you prefer. The amount of lemon juice can be adjusted as per your personal preference. Adding some amount of lemon juice is important to prevent the browning of apples.
  • Topping: I have used a mix of oats and flour for topping and it gives a nice crunch. Along with that, I have also added a mix of chopped nuts. The choice is nuts is also personal and you can add whichever nuts you have available with you and that you like.

Ingredient List

For the filling

  • Green Apples – 500 gms (about 3)
  • Lemon Juice – 2 tsp
  • Brown Sugar – 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp
  • Flour – 1 tbsp
  • Cinnamon Powder – 1/2 tsp

For the topping

  • Oats – 1/2 cup
  • Flour – 1/2 cup
  • Chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews, pecans) – 1/4 cup
  • Brown Sugar – 1/4 cup
  • Baking Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Cinnamon Powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – a pinch
  • Butter – 1/4 cup, melted

Step by Step Process

  1. Preheat the oven at 180 C.
  2. Core the apples and chop it into cubes. Add all the remaining ingredients for the filling and toss it together. Spread this filling mixture in an 8×8 inch square baking tin.
  3. Mix all the dry ingredients for the topping together. To this, add the melted butter and mix it well. Next, spread the topping evenly onto the apple filling.
  4. Bake for 30 min or till top changes color to a slight golden brown color. Serve warm topped with some vanilla sauce or some vanilla ice cream and butterscotch sauce.
